Week 2 -Values as a Compass
Seeing What Truly Matters : Clarity emerges when values are explicit.
Clarity thrives when anchored in values.
Values act as a compass - guiding choices, decisions and priorities amid the chaos of daily teaching life. This week invites reflection on what principles matter most to you, both professionally and personally. Kindness, fairness, curiosity, patience, joy and connection are examples…. but the key is to identify your own guiding truths.
When the calendar is crowded and demands are high, values become a filter for decision-making. Stephen Covey’s timeless advice resonates:
“The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”
This week, ask yourself: What is the main thing I want to nurture this year? What anchors my teaching and my life?
When choices arise, returning to your values helps you decide quickly and confidently.
Values also shape how you interact with students, colleagues, and family.
For example:
If patience is central, moments of frustration are reframed as opportunities to practice calm.
If curiosity is key, challenges become invitations to explore and learn, rather than sources of stress.
In this way, it is easy to see how our identified values create continuity across classrooms, meetings and personal life, providing a stabilising thread in a dynamic environment.
This week, try articulating one or two key values as guiding statements. Perhaps write them where you can see them daily or reflect on how they influence small decisions.
Notice how clarity emerges when values are explicit:
planning feels easier,
boundaries are clearer,
and your energy is preserved for what truly matters.
Your values provide a compass for every choice, action, and interaction. By anchoring in values, clarity becomes less about mental decluttering alone and more about navigating the year with intentionality, focus and integrity.
Don’t wait to take care of yourself. Your wellbeing matters today.
